WORD’s 21st Annual Fun Fish Event was a huge success with over 1,200 people in attendance. The day started out a little cool and overcast, but families still came out to enjoy a fun day of FREE fishing on the Guadalupe River at Camp Huaco Springs. A free lunch was provided for everyone. Registered kiddos received a free t-shirt, bait, tackle, and a loaner fishing pole. Educational stations were set-up to teach kids about fishing, water safety, poaching, and recycling.
Texas Parks & Wildlife stocked over 2,000 fish the day of the event, tagging 50 of those fish for cash prizes. Trophies were awarded for the longest fish caught in each age category and medals were given out to every child that caught a fish. Cash prizes were given on the spot for catching a tagged fish. Landen Sides, the grand prize winner, caught the overall longest fish measuring 17”.
Every year we have some of the most dedicated people come out to help with Fun Fish, and this year was no exception. There were over 100 volunteers that showed up to assist in various capacities. Thank you for all your help - we couldn’t have done it without you! In addition to the many volunteers, area businesses come forward to help out as well. We would like to recognize the following businesses for their contribution to this year’s event:
Camp Huaco Springs, Rust Game Place, HEB, TPWD, GVTC, Cabela’s, High Sierra Toilet Company, Waste Connections, Lowe’s Supermarket, Culligan Water, Pure Fishing, and Wright Distributing.
Additionally, we would like to thank Canyon Lake Fire/EMS and the Comal County Constables for spending the day with us to keep everyone safe.
Pictures and more information about the winners will be on WORD’s Facebook page. We hope everyone had a good time and hope to see you next year!
